چکیده

We show that the ”puzzling” chemical composition observed in the extremely metal poor star HE0107-5240 may be naturally explained by the concurrent pollution of at least two supernovae. In the simplest possible model a supernova of quite low mass (∼ 15 M⊙), underwent a ”normal” explosion and ejected ∼ 0.06 M⊙ of Ni while a second one was massive enough (∼ 35 M⊙) to experience a strong fall back that locked in a compact remnant all the carbon-oxygen core. In a more general scenario, the pristine gas clouds were polluted by one or more supernovae of relatively low mass (less than ∼ 25 M⊙). The successive explosion of a quite massive star experiencing an extended fall back would have largely raised the abundances of the light elements in its close neighborhood. HE 0107 − 5240 , A Chemically Ancient Star . I . A Detailed Abundance Analysis

We report a detailed abundance analysis for HE 0107−5240, a halo giant with [Fe/H]NLTE = −5.3. This star was discovered in the course of follow-up mediumresolution spectroscopy of extremely metal-poor candidates selected from the digitized Hamburg/ESO objective-prism survey. On the basis of high-resolution VLT/UVES spectra, we derive abundances for 8 elements (C, N, Na, Mg, Ca, Ti, Fe, and Ni),...

We have determined the oxygen abundance of HE 0107−5240 from UV-OH lines detected in VLT/UVES spectra. Using a plane-parallel LTE model atmosphere, we derive [O/Fe] = +2.4, and a similar analysis of CD −38 245 yields [O/Fe] = +1.0. We estimate systematic errors due to 3D effects to be in the order of 0.3 to 0.4 dex. That is, our derived O abundances are likely overestimates: effects from therma...

Primordial Stellar Feedback and the Origin of Hyper Metal-poor Stars

The apparent absence of stars in the Milky Way halo with −5 . [Fe/H] . −4 suggests that the gas out of which the halo stars were born experienced a period of low or delayed star formation after the local universe was lit up by the first, metalfree generation of stars (Pop III). Negative feedback owed to the Pop III stars could initially have prevented the pre-Galactic halo from cooling, which t...

Models for extremely metal-poor halo stars

Two alternative scenarios concerning the origin and evolution of extremely metal-poor halo stars are investigated. The first one assumes that the stars have been completely metal-free initially and produced observed carbon and nitrogen overabundances during the peculiar core helium flash typical for low-mass Population III stars. The second scenario assumes that the initial composition resulted...

Very metal-deficient stars that exhibit enhancements of their carbon abundances are of crucial importance for understanding a number of issues – the nature of stellar evolution among the first generations of stars, the shape of the Initial Mass Function, and the relationship between carbon enhancement and neutron-capture processes, in particular the astrophysical s-process. One recent discovery...
